The county was named after Memucan Hunt, Jr., the First Minister of Texas to the United States. He also served as Texas Secretary of the Navy from December 1838 to May 1839. President David G. Burnet appointed Hunt brigadier general in August 1836 and President Sam Houston appointed him agent to the United States to assist William H. Wharton in securing the recognition of Texas. He was inspector general of the army and then adjutant general in the Somervell expedition in 1842.
