The county seat of Montague County is Montague, which is about one hour, 40 minutes from Dallas, and about one hour, 15 minutes from Fort Worth. As of the 2010 census, Montague County’s population was 19,719 after being 19,117 in the 2000 census, 17,274 in 1990, 17,410 in 1980, and 15,326 in 1970. It has a peak population of 25,123 in 1910. The county is named after Daniel Montague, who the Texas State Historical Association identifies as a pioneer surveyor, state senator, and foreman of the jury involved in the Great Hanging at Gainesville. In 1837, Montague brought his family to Texas to settle at Old Warren in the Fannin Land District on the Red River and became the first surveyor of that district. Montague became a leader in the settlers’ fight against the Indians, led the attack in what was said to be the last Indian fight in what is now Grayson County. Montague was a member of the Snively expedition in 1843, and during the Mexican War, he served as a captain of volunteers in the Third Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers, under the command of Colonel William C. Young. Montague was elected district surveyor in 1854, Cooke county commissioner in 1858 and 1862, and state senator in 1863.
